Rupees. 100 and 200 denominations of Indian currency are generally accepted in Nepal, whereas Tibet accepts the Chinese Yuan. Getting currencies exchanged is simple, anywhere on the Kailash yatra route, but a majority of travellers exchange it either in Nepal or at the Nepal-Tibet border. The rates of exchange are as per revised market numbers, as it keeps on changing per the moment. Since UPI, international debit cards, and ATM cards are generally not accepted anywhere in this region, it is advised that you carry along enough cash with you.

During your trip to Kailash Mansarovar, USD is rarely accepted. Nonetheless, it is best to exchange your regional currency for the local currency, i.e., the Chinese Yuan, and avoid using any foreign cash for a convenient and hassle-free yatra experience.

The majority of the items are covered within your Kailash Yatra package; however, there are three main areas where personal expenses may arise: shopping, medical (in case of an emergency), and pony-porter services during Kailash parikrama, where the cost of pony-porter ranges from 3500 to 4000 Yuan. Moreover, the purchasing cost varies from person to person, and the cost of medical care (500 to 1000 Yuan) depends on the evacuation location. Also, other than the pony/porter charges (approx 4000 Yuan), if you purchase essential items like a raincoat, dry fruits, oxygen cylinder, socks, etc, it may cost you somewhere between 2000 to 2500 Yuan additionally. So, it's advised to keep anywhere nearly 6000 to 6500 Yuan in cash for a seamless yatra experience. But, if you are not taking any pony or porter services, 2000 to 3000 Yuan would be enough.

The location from which the pilgrim is being evacuated determines the evacuation fee, also an ambulance service is only offered until Kailash parikrama's first day. A drop to Darchen will cost about 500-700 CNY per person, and a drop to Purang town will cost approximately 1000 CNY per person. Please note that these prices can be quoted differently from what we said, as local facilitation might get price-hiked over time.

On completing the Kailash Yatra, you can return the unused currencies (NPR and Yuan) in Nepal or at the Nepal-Tibet border at any exchange centre.
