Do Dham & Its Spiritual Significance
‘Dham’ is a Hindi word meaning ‘sacred pilgrimage’, while ‘Do’ is the number two. Amidst the Himalayan range in Uttarakhand lie these two Dhams – Badrinath at an altitude of 3,133 meters (10,500 ft.) above sea level and Kedarnath at an altitude of around 3,583 meters (11,755 ft.) above sea level.
Badrinath is the place where Lord Vishnu meditated in the form of Badri Narayan for the welfare of the world. When Lord Vishnu was performing intense penance here in harsh weather, Goddess Lakshmi transformed into a Badri tree (berry tree) to protect him. This is how it became known as Badrinath. When Narada Muni (the Sage) once went to Vaikuntha and saw Goddess Lakshmi massaging Vishnu’s feet, the Lord explained that his true place of meditation on Earth is at Badrikashram (Badrinath), highlighting the place’s supremacy.
During the Dwapara Yuga, when the Pandavas embarked on their journey to Swargarohini (the path to heaven), they passed through this region. Adi Shankaracharya, who established the four Dhams, placed Badrinath as the Dham of the North for attaining Moksha (liberation).
The Mahabharata also narrates the story of Kedarnath. Lord Shiva avoided the Pandavas when they sought forgiveness for killing their own family members. He took the form of Nandi (a bull). However, as soon as the second Pandava brother, Bhima, recognised him, Lord Shiva disappeared into the ground. His hump appeared at Kedarnath, while other parts appeared at nearby places, together known as the Panch Kedar. Hence, at Kedarnath, Lord Shiva is worshipped in his Jyotirlinga form.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Same Day Do Dham Yatra: Dehradun to Badrinath & Kedarnath
Is it safe to travel with elderly people or children?
Yes, helicopter travel is safe for both the elderly and children. It provides a controlled environment and our ground assistance ensures that seniors and children do not have to navigate crowds or difficult terrain alone. Barring the 500 metre walk to Kedarnath, the complete travel is in a very small group.
Are there any health problems that first-time pilgrims may encounter?
Kedarnath and Badrinath are both at high altitudes and being a single day trip, devotees usually don’t encounter any serious altitude sickness. However, some may feel mild breathlessness, fatigue, headache or slight nausea which are manageable.
Is this tour suitable for people with physical limitations?
Absolutely. Since the helicopter lands near the temples, there is zero trekking involved and minimal walking. This makes it the best option for senior citizens and those with limited physical strength to visit these spiritual places. However, there can be a few stairs on the way to the temple that you would be required to climb.
Do I need registration or any permit for the Do Dham Yatra?
Yes. All pilgrims have to register on the Uttarakhand Government portal. However, Trip to Temples can assist you with the mandatory Yatra registration.
When is the best time for the Do Dham Yatra by helicopter?
The Yatra is seasonal. It can be undertaken only between April and October. The temperature varies between 6°C and 25°C. June is the best month when the day temperatures are relatively high. The helicopter schedule is shared 24 hours prior based on weather predictions.
