Chinese Yuan is the local currency for Mount Kailash that is functional in Tibet and other regions of China. The average exchange rate from Chinese Yuan to Indian Rupees is roughly Rs.12. The currency can be converted into Chinese Yuan at an immigration counter in Zhangmu. If you are travelling via the Kathmandu route, you can exchange your money at the money exchange in Kathmandu.
Once you have completed the yatra, the unused NPR and Yuan can be returned at the exchange centres at the Nepal-Tibet border. NPR and Yuan can also be purchased from the pilgrims exiting Tibet.
