World Environment Day 2025: India’s Plastic-Free Drive to Combat Global Pollution Crisis

The tourism sector, which accounts for approximately 80% of coastal area activity globally, faces particular scrutiny in plastic waste management. According to One Planet's "Tourism's Plastic Pollution Problem" report, ocean plastic pollution increases by 40% during peak tourist seasons, with 8 million tonnes entering marine ecosystems annually.

Revolutionary initiatives like "Recykal" along the Char Dham pilgrimage route demonstrate innovative solutions to this challenge. The digital Deposit Refund System (dDRS) has recycled over 2 million bottles, reduced CO2 emissions by 66 metric tons, and created 110+ employment opportunities while saving ₹3.73 crore in public funds.

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change unveiled the ambitious “One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution” campaign on May 23rd, aligning with India’s flagship Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative. This comprehensive environmental protection strategy emphasizes the critical principles of Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle across all sectors.

"This campaign highlights India's unwavering commitment to environmental protection and sustainability," stated the Union Minister, underscoring the nation's dedication to combating the plastic waste crisis that threatens ecosystems globally.

The Prime Minister of India, on the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, had launched the #EkPedMaaKeNaam initiative under a tree plantation drive and promoting reforestation in the Aravali range, the word Maa symbolizes Mother Nature, who nurtures life on earth. Later, he flagged off the Clean Urban Mobility campaign by launching Electric buses in the Delhi region.

In the same line, the Uttar Pradesh government has implemented mandatory environmental education programs across all 75 districts, culminating in a 100-foot collaborative art installation crafted entirely from recycled materials, a testament to creative approaches in waste management.
