Gaurikund

About Gauri Kund:

Gaurikund is a perfectly round-shaped water body related to Mata Parvati- the consort of Lord Shiva. Maa Parwati is said to be the Goddess of Fertility and Divine Power. As per Hindu Mythology, Mata Parvati used to take bath at Gaurikund every day. This blue-coloured Kund (reservoir) is said to be the Lake of Purity and Compassion. Gaurikund is believed to be a sight of great spiritual importance while on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Splashing a few drops of the Gaurikund Jal can get you rid of illness and purify your soul.

Location of Gauri Kund:

Gaurikund is located at an elevation of 5600 meters and can be spotted on the second day of Mount Kailash Parikrama. The second-day parikrama of Mount Kailash from Dhirapuk to Zuthulpuk is 22km. After trekking 6km uphill from Dhirapuk we reach Dolma La Pass which is the highest point of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. As soon as we move about 400-500 meters from Dolma La Pass, one can spot Gaurikund towards their right side.

Significance of Gauri Kund:

Lord Ganesha is believed to have been born from bubbles formed when Mata Parvati was bathing in Gauri Kund. After his birth, Mata Parvati placed her son Ganesha at the entrance of Gaurikund to guard the place and stop the invaders. Lord Ganesha was an ardent listener of his mother, such that one day he even stopped Lord Shiva to enter the Gauri Kund area to meet Mata Parvati. This made Lord Shiva so angry and infuriated that he decapitated his own son making him lose his life. Maa Parvati requested Lord Shiva to bring their son Ganesha back to life. Lord Shiva replaced an elephant's head with Ganesha's head and brought Lord Ganesha back to life. With this Maa Parvati became happy again.

Water of Gauri Kund:

There is no track to reach Gauri Kund and one can spot Gauri Kund from a distance. The water of Gauri Kund is very cold as the reservoir is freezing most of the time. Taking a dip in Gauri Kund is impossible. However incase you need the holy water of Gauri Kund, then you can ask the Sherpa to get it for you and you can give him some tip for this.
