"Divya Desham" means "Divine Abodes" or "Holy Places." There are 108 Divya Desams, each holding its importance and stories related to Lord Vishnu. These Divya Desams are spread throughout India, mainly in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka. Devastated by the death of Sati, Lord Shiva is believed to have conducted the Rudra Thaandavam at Ubaya Cauvery, located a few kilometers southeast of Seerkazhi.

His performance was so intense that for every hair that fell, a new form of Shiva emerged. Within moments, 11 distinct forms of Shiva were all performing the Rudra Thaandavam. Fearing the potential harm to the world from Shiva's rage, Lord Vishnu appeared before Shiva as Paramapatha Naathan.

Moved by Lord Vishnu's presence, Rudra asked for Vishnu to appear in the same number of forms. Lord Vishnu agreed and granted Rudra the opportunity to see him in 11 different forms at ThiruNangur, each taking one form from one of the 11 Divya Desams, which now make up the 11 Divya Desams in and around ThiruNangur.
