ABOUT KAAL BHAIRAV TEMPLE

Kaal Bhairav Temple is a Hindu temple located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. This temple is the oldest in Varanasi, entirely dedicated to Kaal Bhairav, the fiery form of Lord Shiva. Kaal means "death" and "time". It is said that Lord Shiva assumed this form only when he had to kill someone. Kashi was a very important city for Lord Shiva, and Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav ​​as Kshetrapal. Therefore, Kaal Bhairav also has the right to punish the Kashi people. In the sanctuary of the temple there is a silver idol of Kaal Bhairav, the dog “Shvna” , although there are variations. ORIGIN OF KAAL BHAIRAV TEMPLE IN KASHI

The origin of the Kaal Bhairav Temple in Kashi is steeped in mythology and legends. According to Hindu mythology, after the creation of the universe, Lord Brahma, the creator, and Lord Vishnu, the preserve, had a heated argument about their supremacy. In the course of their dispute, a massive fiery pillar emerged before them, challenging both their powers. They decided to find the beginning and end of the pillar, but neither could succeed. 
Then Lord Shiva, the destroyer, appeared in the form of a fierce and inspiring entity known as Kaal Bhairav. The pillar was none  other than Lord Shiva’s manifestation, who revealed his form to prove his supremacy over all other gods. This incident established Lord Shiva’s position as the ultimate deity, and the manifestation as Kaal Bhairav became a symbol of his power.

The place where this divine encounter occurred is believed to be the location of the Kaal Bhairav temple in Varanasi. The temple is situated on the banks of the Ganges River, in close proximity to the Vishwanath Temple, another prominent Hindu pilgrimage site in Varanasi.

The construction of Kaal Bhairav temple is wrong. However, the current temple was built in the 17th century. This ancient temple is believed to have been destroyed during the Islamist victories over northern India and rebuilt in the 17th century. It is believed that Lord Shiva appointed  Kaal Bhairav as Kshetrapal of Kashi to protect Mother Sati's body. A part of Mata Sati's body fell in the form of a “Pind”  to Kashi, one of Mata's fifty-one Shakti Peethas.This place is known as Vishalakshi Temple.

The idol of Kaal Bhairav has a silvery face. This statue has a trident. The idol of Kaal Bhairav sits in his Vahana (vehicle). Kalabhairava is a fierce form of Lord Shiva, with a garland of skulls around his neck and peacock feathers. After passing through the gate, visitors can only see the decorated (garlanded) face of the icon. The rest of the symbol is covered with cloth. At the back gate of the temple is an idol representing another aspect of Kalabhairava.

FESTIVALS OF KAAL BHAIRAV TEMPLE

Bhairava Ashtami and Mahashivratri are the most famous festivals at Kaal Bhairav temple.

The Kaal Bhairav Temple is open to worshipers seven days a week during the temple's official opening hours. People believe that worshiping Kaal Bhairav brings wealth, good fortune and protection from death. Sundays and Tuesdays are considered important days for devotion to Kaal Bhairav.There is no entrance fee to the temple. HOW TO REACH KAAL BHAIRAV TEMPLE VARANASI

The Kaal Bhairav temple is situated in a spiritual place Varanasi. There are three ways to reach-

BY AIR- The quickest way to travel from Delhi to Varanasi is by taking flight. You can book your flight from INDIRA GANDHI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (DEL) TO LAL BAHADUR SHASHTRI (VNS) in VARANASI. From the airport it's 24.4km to the temple so you can take a taxi or cab to reach the Kaal Bhairav temple.

BY TRAIN- Varanasi is well- connected to Delhi by train. Several trains operate from this route including overnight trains. From Varanasi Junction it’s 1.5 km to the temple so you can take a taxi or any local transportation to reach Kaal Bhairav temple.

BY ROAD- You can also travel from Delhi to Varanasi by road. The distance between the two cities is approximately 815 kms (506 miles) and the journey takes around 12-14 hours by car or bus, depending on the traffic and route taken. If you are taking bus service to reach Varanasi, the bus stand is 3.5 kms to the temple, so from there you can use local transportation to reach the temple.

There are different types of accommodation available near the temple. 

Varanasi city center is best for Hotels or Guesthouses, it offers convenience and easy access to various attractions including temples. Popular areas in Varanasi include Dashashwamedh Ghat, Assi Ghat, and Godowlia.
