Shiva or Mahadev is believed to supreme God in the Shavaite tradition. Lord Shiva, who is the destructor and regenerator of this universe is said to wear the bones of the dead. It is said that he used to smear himself in ashes - signifying the burning of the lower desires. Lord Shiva is also known as ‘Mahakal’ or the God beyond time. He is the only God who can change past, present, and future. Ravana—the King of demons once tried to uplift Mount Kailash to take Lord Shiva with him to Sri Lanka. However, he faced Lord Shiva’s wrath, and his hands were stuck while lifting the gigantic Kailash Parvat. And so, he was advised by Nandi to recite Shiva Tandav Stotram to please Lord Shiva. The Shiva Tandav Stotram was recited and composed by Ravana at Kailash Mansarovar.

The two beautiful freshwater lakes—Mansarovar and Rakshastal are located at Kailash Mansarovar. While Lake Mansarovar is believed to be the world’s holiest Lakes with sacred waters, Rakshastal is a saltwater Lake that is said to represent darkness and negativity.
